Join us at Davie County Early College’s Summer Camp of 2024! Check out our flyer here ! Davie County Early College is hosting a 3-day leadership camp June 12-14, 2024. We will work on building strong leaders through a variety of activities, tours, and challenges. Our camp will be Wednesday through Friday from 8:00am - 3:00pm. The cost of this camp is $20.00 for students and their families. Established in 2007, Davie Early College is a cooperative, innovative high school located on the Davidson-Davie Community College (DDCC) campus in Mocksville, NC. The Early College model emphasizes preparing students for college and work, requiring powerful teaching and learning, maintaining a personalized atmosphere where students can achieve academically, redefining professionalism, and sustaining a unique and purposeful school design. Most Early College students are members of at least one of the populations that are typically underrepresented on college campuses. Students are admitted through an application process during the 8th grade, and they begin taking college courses in the fall of their freshman year. Students graduate in 4, 4½ or 5 years with a high school diploma (28 credits minimum) and an Associate of Arts degree (60 credit hours minimum) or transferable college credits (the Associate of Science is not offered on our campus). Most high school courses are considered both college preparatory and honors level. Early College Academics Below is the typical path to graduation: English: (4 high school credits required) – 2 to 3 courses are honors-level high school (English I through II or III). The remaining 4 courses are college-level: 1 courses in writing and research, American Literature, and British Literature. Math: (4 high school credits required) – NC Math 1, NC Math 2 & 3 Honors, and 2 additional college-level math courses such as Quantitative Literacy, Statistics, Precalculus, and Calculus. Social Studies: (4 high school credits required) – World History, Personal Finance and Civics & Economics are high school, honors-level. American History I & II are both college courses. At least one additional Social Science course, such as Psychology. Science: (3 high school credits required) – Earth & Environmental Science and Biology are both honors-level high school. Physical Science is a high school course. Science college coursework is generally limited to General Biology and pre-nursing. Health/PE: (1 high school credit required) – one college physical education course (such as Weight Training or Physical Fitness) and one Health & Wellness college class (some non-credit high school instruction). Foreign Language – Elementary Spanish I and II college courses. Intermediate Spanish also offered at college-level. Seminar – 21st Century Readiness explores professionalism, organization & time management, and college study skills. Creating Career Success introduces the career planning process, resumes, and interviewing. SAT/ACT Preparation covers college entrance examinations. Ready for College helps students learn about getting into and paying for college. Electives – High school courses such as Professional Management and Yearbook are available. Most electives are college level courses to complete the AA degree in fields such as humanities/arts or music/art appreciation. Student Life Community Service : All DCEC students participate in community service yearly, spending a minimum of 20 hours volunteering in several school-wide group projects. Students are also encouraged to volunteer on their own. Small School & College Experience: Early College Students have limited elective opportunities outside of college coursework, and are limited to coursework within the AA Degree. Students may apply to Yearbook or to become a student intern, a school leadership role assisting teachers and office staff and earning credit in Professional Management & Leadership. Students also explore their interests through job shadowing and by arranging their own experiences outside the curriculum. Extracurricular Opportunities : Davie Early College offers no organized sports. Service-oriented club opportunities are Junior Civitan, National Honor Society, and Interact. There is a small offering of other clubs, such as Environmental Club, Robotics Club, Student Government Association, Debate Club, and religious clubs, which extend extracurricular opportunities further.
